Your Postseason Has Come...

...but your team isn't going to be there.

How's this for next season's slogan: "The 2008 Mets...We'll Try Not to F**k Things Up This Season."

Thanks a lot Mets...for nothing. Absolutely nothing.

More later. Lots more.

I had to work this morning - when I got home the game had already started. I thought I had better check the box score on the internet before turning on the game, as I had a bad feeling about tommy glavine. The next thing that happened is that the number 7 JUMPED off of the computer screen and STABBED ME IN THE HEART.

Metstradamus, I hope you don't stop writing. Thanks for everything

MD, after yesterday's win and Philly lost, all Mets fans got a false sense of positive hope. Then the first inning came today, and came and came and wouldn't end. Then the bottom of the first, bags filled, Shrek up, and he hits a long fly ball, back, back and Ross makes the catch. Wait til next year.

I've been through this a long, long time. I remember how they used to let us leave the Polo Grounds via the warning track and out through the big doors in center field. I remember going to the very first opening day at Shea when I was twelve. I remember our first deliverance in '69. What a long, srange trip it's been...wait'll next year!

I went to the game today....I was parking and it was 4-0....I was walking to the stadium and they were lifting Glavine....I was climbing the stairs when Sosa gave up runs 7 and 8....I still stayed to the 9th....Just to let them know how I felt. My postseason tickets shall be burned, not framed.

Yeah, it's funny. I didn't think it was over when Glavine gave up 7. But when Castro's ball didn't quite make it out... I knew that it was over then.

The only good thing about today is that I was provided with several hours to come to turn with what happened.

HoJo for Manager

Unbelieveable. This team made me sick all year. No chemistry. Watching the fans at the end of game was just unbearable. The worst Mets season in a long long time.

I hate to say it but someone has to go. I would not mind getting Girardi as a manager. Too many dumb moves all year long. But the worse of it all is the complacency this team had. Can't have that.

When The Mets got swept in Philly I knew this team was in trouble. I stopped watching and developed anxiety. Thank you NYM!

Thank God the agony is over.

Starter Bullpen Kit for 2008

If this is what happens when you believe, then Fuck believing. Screw hoping. I truly and utterly believed that this team was going to pull through for me, and I was wrong. I don't know if I even care about '08 anymore. This team has to win my allegiance back. I hate to admit it but Jimmy Rollins was right. Let Glavine go back to ATL. Let Wagner go his own way. Give me David Wright, Moises Alou, Luis Castillo, Endy, Pedro, Ollie, Maine, and the rest can go to hell.

Worst moment ever as a Mets fan - worse than enduring those awful last place teams.

I can't even think about baseball until next year.

Only one positive can come out of this - Omar will have hopefully learned that you can't build a winning team around three ancient starting pitchers who can't go more than 5-6 innings, and a bunch of has-been and never-was relievers. If Glavine and El Duque are still on the team next year, they've learned nothing from this embarassment.

And Keith and Darling are right - these idiotic celebrations in the 3rd and 4th inning after meaningless home runs must stop. Totally immature, and totally stupid given they way they played the last two weeks.

Thanks again MD - enjoyed your stuff as usual.

I too would like to burn my NLDS tickets for a game that was supposed to be played Wednesday at Shea Stadium.

Sadly, you can't burn a PDF file so I am out of luck.

Thanks for giving this season *your* all, Metstra. Again, you were my main source for Mets news this year as I was (thank God) two years removed from my habit of following just about every game in Gameday. If I had been as obsessed with this team this year as I was a few years back, today would have been a killer. I sympathize with all of those for whom it has been one.

bleedingorangeandblue captured my sentiments more or less exactly: I don't know if I can support these guys over another 162-game season. Here's my take:

"We're devastated, also," manager Willie Randolph said. "It's just a tough life lesson in baseball."
--ESPN.com's article about today's game

I can't begin to imagine what lesson he had in mind. Any ideas?

I am at a loss for words regarding the events of the past 2 weeks. The pitching has been horrible. They have seemingly given up 4-5 run leads night after night. Other times the starting pitching would put them in a hole early. Glavine in particular has been terrible. If I see him in a Met uniform next year, I am done with this team. However, I probably won't have to worry about that because appparently he re-signed with the braves about 2 weeks ago.

Willie needed to get pissed off, but he never did. He was like a deer in the headlights the whole time.

The offense (Wright & Alou in particular) did their best to score runs. But they probably felt like they had to throw up a 10 spot every night because the bullpen was going to blow any lead they gave. I got sick of seeing Reyes pop up time after time. I applaud Castillo. He wanted to win but was hurt. The Phillies wanted it more than the Mets. They deserve to go to the playoffs. They grabbed it.

To add insult to injury I got to see Kazmir become the AL strikeout leader the other night on TV (I live in the Tampa area).

I have a question. Who gets the blame for this meltdown? Willie? The Players? Minaya? In any case it looks like a lot of work has to be done in the offseason.

Kyle - The lesson for me was: its probably a bad idea to devote your entire summer to watching baseball.
But I will probably do it again next year.

The New York Mets as a Whole owe the Fans a public apology for this seeing the fans crying in the stands made me cry my eyes out we were so disapointed last year and we are absolutley crushed this year! This was the worst experience ever for Us die hard Mets fans and we went through this for a whole month lets hope they make all the right moves for the 08 Season we all know Fred Wilpon has Plenty of Money. I've beed reading this blog for a few years, but haven't commented in a long time.

I was very pissed off when this game ended (of course I'm talking about the first inning).

This team didn't deserve a spot in the playoffs - they wouldn't have done a damn thing if they made it there. Last year was much more crushing because it really was a special year and I really felt they would win it all.

Now that a couple of hours have passed, I feel pretty indifferent. In my mind, where we go from here is easy.

1. What transpired in the last 3 weeks is completely unacceptable and heads have to role. This team was build for a title and it's obvious this group of guys won't get it done. First and foremost, Willie needs to be fired.

2. There will not be any one or two players that will make this team a champion. A rebuilding (albeing an fairly easy and quick one) is in order. Identify our core young players (Reyes, Wright, Maine, Perez) and make anyone else on the team available.

3. We try and trade for as many good prospects as possible. There's a lot of valuable guys on our team. We suck it up for a couple years. This will be the quickest and least painful way to build a champion.

I wasn't old enough to go to games at the Polo Grounds, but I remember seeing Casey Stengel do a commercial for some antacid--I think it was Brioski.

Could have used some Brioski today.

I'm 25 years old. 1986 isn't all that vivid to me, but I remember the meltdown of Gooden, Strawberry, the Saberhagen Years, the Vince Coleman debacle, Jeff Kent, Bernard Gilkey, and being there in person with my yankee fan girlfriend for the Subway series. Last year was crushing, but I felt a sense of hope. That hope was nurtured all season long by this team, the arrival of Maine and Perez as legit, the return of Pedro, but it all went to shit faster than I could blink an eye. My dad says this is all just part of being a Mets fan, that it's times like this that make 1986 so wonderful. God I wish I could remember it.

Heads have to roll somewhere. Willie is safe. Omar is safe. Maybe it's gotta be Petersen? As much as I love what he's done with Ollie and Maine, the pitching staff was what did us in, and he should have been there to right the ship somehow, or at least slow the bleeding. He did neither.

I think the camaraderie, either real or perceived, that we attain from forums like this adds to why we keep coming back. The "we were in this together" is, beyond any comprehension to those not in the know, actually a comfort right now. Having somewhere to go to rail on about specific mistakes or merely type obscenities in a place where they'll undoubtedly resonate is one of the best by-products of the tech era of baseball. The mezzanine and the corner bar aren't the only places to commiserate any more.

Kudos to Mestradamus on the diligent march through an ultimately painful season. Speaking of march, see you then.

I read this blog but I've never posted here before. Just wanted to thank you for a year of wonderfully entertaining posts and comments. Next to FAFIF, this is my favorite Mets blog.

This year was a nightmare. This team deserved what it got. Next year fills me with dread. I am having homocidal thoughts about Tom Glavine.

Let's go Mets.

For all of you that got a good laugh in 2004 when the Yankees choked against the Red Sox (and you know you did).....here is history right back at you. Your own choke and a historical one at that. Welcome to the club. Misery loves company.

Now the Yankees defied the odds and the snickering Met fans back in May...when we were in last place and the Mets were in first. Last time we missed the playoffs was in 1993...before many of you were born!

Now you're known as the "amazins" for a different reason! You gotta believe? Not from what I see on this blogsite. Its hard to tell over the past month whether Metstra and the bloggers actually really believe, are a bunch of quitters, or flip flop positions on a day to day basis.
