When You Wish Upon What The Mets Call "Stars"
At the beginning of the day, I stopped at a fountain, and made a wish that the Mets would gain a game on the Phillies tonight. I was desperate. With that, I took a penny out of my pocket and hurled it towards the fountain with my eyes shut tight.
As I opened my eyes, there was Willie Harris diving in the fountain and catching my penny before it could hit the water.
But you know what, even after Harris' latest defensive gem which helped put a nail in the Mets 2008 season (which is currently in a hand basket on Hell's front porch), I'm beginning to think that it could have been Lenny Harris out in left field, and it wouldn't matter.
In fact, screw that. The Nationals could have fielded nine Lenny Harrises tonight. It didn't matter. It's not going to matter. Not when you can't get hits off a guy who gave up six runs in three innings in his last start against ... oh, wouldn't you know it? The Mets!
So let's review: The Mets are out of first place, Fernando Tatis is out for the season, and Endy Chavez couldn't save AIG. So for tomorrow's meeting, let's try reading from the passage of "Maple Bats, The Heimlich, and You".

Last year, with 13 games left to go, the Mets lost to the Nationals 9-8. They took a four run lead in the top of the first, but Maine got knocked around in the 5th inning. If they hit, they can't pitch. If they pitch, they can't hit. Last night, the text poll asked how fans thought the Mets would finish - win the division, win the wild card, or out of the playoffs. 54% of the fans said "out of the playoffs". Keith said that was harsh. I'm surprised that the number wasn't higher.
To end on a positive note - last year, the Mets won game 150, beating the Nats by a score of 8-4. Pelfrey got the win.
The Phillies seem to be the anti-Mets. They cant be killed by conventional weapons!
And you think a penny was going to get us a game? That was your first mistake. Anything less than a dime and your just asking to be disapointed!
Deja Vu all over again....How come the Mets do not have a closer like Ryan Howard? The calender turns to September and they forget how to win while the team 90 miles south keeps getting clutch hits from a man who is batting .249....
This is really killing me....
Beezermess....
P.S. Happy 22nd Anniversary to those who want to remember the good old days....

Here in Phillthy, they're happy Tatis missed the ball, directly leading to the Mets loss, but happier that he is injured for the year. Remember how he offended them so with his "antics" crossing home plate after a homerun....
This just can't be happening. We lost a 4 game lead in the loss column in less than a week. And we can't hit Nationals pitching . . .
OK, I'll go with Jerry's "we're going to be fine" and Wright's "bump in the road" decription.
But . . .
If this team fails to secure a playoff spot, they're a bunch of chokers.
Hey Metstra, maybe you should have a "Groundhog Day" themed post. Complete with an amusing photoshopped picture!
Oh please... Down here in Philly, no one gives a shit about Fernando Tatis because he's a quad-A bench warmer. Get over yourself!
Unser....I will go one better...
If they miss the playoffs, Omar should be fired....
No excuses anymore...they can't blame Willie for this...

Can't even blame Mota.
I'm sure if you go back in some lineage of events, Guillermo Mota is to blame for some aspect of last night's game. I don't know what ... I'm just sure it's there.
This morning on Mike and Mike on ESPNRadio, Steve Phillips talked about how the Mets losing their hold on 1st place is a good thing because now they are playing from behind instead of up front. Last year they lost 1st place on the last day of the season so they did not have the opportunity to play from behind and catch up. So, good job Mets. Lose a few more and we are exactly where we want to be. If it doesn't work out I say next year we want to be 20 - 25 games out at the All Star break and all will be well since we'll be able to play from behind the entire 2nd half. Genius.
Love that Steve Phillips. That guy should be a general manager or something.
mets a. k. a. el choke loco. they seem not to have the will to win or the pride. they should all get a life. this team is heartless. jkay
