It Could Always Get Worse

The one thing that always bothered me about Willie Randolph was the fact that he wouldn't go out and protect his players while they were getting into it with umpires. So you'll forgive me for being excited when Jerry Manuel went out to protect Carlos Beltran in his argument with the highly unprofessional Brian Runge (isn't nepotism wonderful), and then got ejected for "getting" bumped. Of course, Beltran went and got himself run anyway for saying the magic word (which according to Beltran was the highly toxic four-letter word "weak"), but at least finally the team has escaped the tyranny of the stoic arm folding of Willie Randolph and are on the same page with its manager.

Except that page they're on? It's in a book that has ripped pages, pages with mustard stains on them, the glue in the binding is coming apart, and the paperback cover has been stolen. In fact, the book that tells the tale of the 2008 Mets' season will do more to promote illiteracy than Officer Barbrady ever did. Who wants to read after that?

In the long run, it's nice to have team harmony. It's nice to have a manager stick up for you. And despite Beltran's refusal to take the bait of the beat reporters after the game and say that yeah, Willie Randolph never went and stuck up for us so he basically lost us, you can't say for sure he wasn't thinking it. But team harmony, however nice it may be, unfortunately means nothing when your lineup at the end of the night have averages of .293, .258, .205, .230, .148, .254 (which was .224 to start the night), .265, and .234, and can't do anything off of Robert Allen Dickey or Rodney Allen Rippy.

Oh, and your starting pitcher makes Barry Zito look crisp.

(Editor's Note: Kenji Johjima, a .218 hitter with two home runs this season, hit a bomb off of Oliver Perez.)

To sum up, the Mets lost 11-0 ... to the worst team in baseball. Yes ... to be the worst you have to get beat by the worst. Our team, at this time, has hit yet another rock bottom. I can't imagine a lower plateau unless Newtown High School suddenly appears on the schedule. (Don't laugh: they're over .500 unlike a certain other team that plays in Queens.)

Hey, if you're declaring Shennanigans, you better make certain that the balls don't fit in Jennifer Love Hewitt's mouth...

...then again, it wouldn't shock me if Jojihma's blast was able to squeak through and give him the choice of either a hair clip or comb. Hell, there've been enough Mariner bombs thus far that they could trade them in to get the cheap Terrance & Phillip dolls...who am I kidding?

Losing to the "worst team in baseball"? Sounds familiar *cough Padres cough*

It's something across the boards in sports, umpires and refs thinking they should be changing the games instead of just officiating them. Runge is a punk, everyone knows it and Jerry and Carlos will be vindicated for it.

This team is not equipped to win right now, especially without Wright. How long is Omar going to wait to pull the trigger on something significant. You best trading chip is going out there every five days and giving up homers to japanese catchers. JAPANESE CATCHERS!

sigh... so far it seems like Jerry's trying too damned hard to be the "Anti-Willie." Oh yeah, and we still suck.

When you have six players in your starting line-up who have less than a 25% chance of getting a hit, you can't expect to win. Honestly, it's a miracle they're only 2 games below .500.

What's the over-under on Delgado getting released before the all-star break?

I was totally shocked when Runge went in front of Beltran to "dust off the plate". Total bush league. Beltran was making his gripe without being disrespectful.

No - rock bottom will be tonight.

Hmmm....we lose 11-0 to Seattle and it doesn't bother me....what that means is that I am already looking towards:
The NBA Draft-so I can see how much more my Knicks get f**ked...
The Free Agent spree in the NHL-so do the Rangers go after Sundin? Keep Jagr? What about Avery? At least one team located on 33rd and 7th is somewhat healthy...
NFL training camp--Go Giants!!!!
NFL Fantasy League--time to repeat!!!
Does that mean that I won't watch the Mets? No but it does mean that I am a firm believer that the only way they can make the playoffs is if they beat bottom-feeders like the Mariners, but to get outscored 16-2 at home means that you don't care...
They do not deserve to make the playoffs. Karma is a bitch and both Omar and the Coupon twins will realize that real soon.....

Terrible isn't even the word. And someone needs to pile on Delgado - what a horror show.

I don't agree with the "coupon" complaint about the Wilpons. Jose and David both got huge contracts.Pedro and the two Carlos's were brought in at great expense. And Johan is not exactly working for minimum wage, either!

If there is to be a criticism of the team, it would be for choosing the wrong players to spend money on, maybe. So that would be on Omar. But at least he didn't sign Barry Zito! Can you imagine if we'd gotten him, instead of Johan?

Lastly, I always try to defend all the players, but even I am finding it hard to love Carlos Delgado right now.

HoJo might be be joining Willie, Peterson and Nieto on the golf course soon to make it a foursome.

I call them "The Coupons" because I still have not forgiven them for not forking over more money than the Angels for Vlad Guerrero....
You are right, they have spent money but haven't you notice that Jose Reyes has really not been the same since getting that contract in which in some circles it has been written that he felt slighted because Wright got more years....
I have also said all along that trading Mike Jacobs for Delgado was a huge mistake....Delgado needs to be benched...right now!!!!

Coming next fall to NBC, "Who Wants to be a Met manager?" Join us as Rodney Allen Rippy, Danny Bonaduce, Gary Coleman, Donnie Most, Pam Dawber, Gary Carter, Tiffany, Arsenio Hall, Abe Vigoda and Art Howe battle it out within the ruins of Shea Stadium to become the next Met manager. Judging the various competitions and challenges will be Omar Minaya, Fred Wilpon, and little Jeff Wilpon and hosting the festivities will be Gary Cohen.

Beezermess,

"Delgado needs to be benched...right now!!!!"

For who?

Marlon Anderson?

Damion Easley?

Fernando Tatis?

If you want to bench him, trade him. He'll cause more problems on the bench than he will on the field. And there's no answer on the roster right now to save the team. You want to bring up Mike Carp and give up on the season and trade Delgado and Perez and everybody else, fine. I don't have problem one with that. I would have more of a problem with the Mets making a Jason Bay for Steve Reed type move at this point.

Let's be fair. Delgado was what the Mets needed to go from a .500 team in '05 to the powerhouse they were in '06. He was also their best hitter in the playoffs that year ... and it wasn't his fault that Beltran couldn't save him one more at-bat in Game 7.

And you never liked the deal, that's fine. But let's not pretend that Mike Jacobs is Lou Gehrig yet. He has good power numbers this season but his OBP is .271. That's lower than every shortstop on baseball. Every one.

(Now go ahead and yell at me on the phone ... I know it's coming.)

Hey, Metstra, you're right about Delgado, we should have won in 2006, if we did, we wouldn't be so wound up about Delgado, but you have to trade him or play him no doubt.

If Ralph Mouth is the next Manager of the Mets I'm buying a Luxary Suite--what a funny guy!

TW said...

Oh and how did Hojo ever get this job? I mean was he really that good of a hitter? I remember two seasons maybe three when he crazy power, but we all know what that could have meant so who is he to mess with anyone's swing.

is it me or does that yankee loving guy, jar jar mark whatever his name is, not post here so much anymore? I wonder why--is it that the Hankenstein edition sucks, or are the mets finally too pathetic to hate?
