It Took A 13th Hour, But ...

It's over, pending a physical. Johan Santana is a Met.

Now if he fails the physical ...

(I'm kidding.)

you HAD to say that. Do all mets fans think that the wheels can come off at any moment?

Never mind - I know they can.

Somebody wake me when its ok to buy my daughter a pink Santana jersey.

Its a great moment for the Mets coming off bad memories of the last two seasons. Santana has the Mets over the barrel in terms of salary and years and the Mets have no negotiating power. The Mets are going to give up some sick years and money for this...but it will be worth it (no more $ jokes for Yankees anymore I guess).

They won't regret a 5th or 6th or 7th year with a young Santana in the same way they have busted with Pedro (remember how everyone hated the idea of that four year deal?). He couldn't help last year and the year before...however, if the Mets win it all with him as a #2...no one will talk about it.

Mets got this deal because the Red Sox don't need him and Yankees are glad they don't have him. After so many pitching busts since 2003, the Yankees are gun shy and don't want to give up the prospects (Hughes and/or Kennedy). Blowing this trade and letting the Red Sox blow off a couple of more championships is a disaster.

Congrats to the Mets. But I have to feel that the reason he's in NY was similar to A-Rod...no takers because they had to pay too much or give too much...and the Mets need him too much as evidenced by the contract.

a hardhat? not the way i went, but I respect your artistic choices.

I fearlessly predict this will be the greatest Santana as a Met since Raphael.

Might even hit for a higher average.

I'm just trying to take that "worst photoshop tribute" award from you. ;)

That pic of Santana in a hardhat kinda makes him look like a member of the Village People.

The physical examination may not be a slam dunk, you know. I heard that Johan's performance the last 1/3 of the season was significantly worse than his usual. So maybe he has an injury of some kind - you remember how Pedro M pitched for quite a while before his shoulder was diagnosed?

I wonder if the "physical examination" required for the contract can also include an MRI. What a dilemna for the physician. Can you imagine being the one to say, "Sorry, the contract is off, he has an unstable knee? or a partially torn rotator cuff?" Or WORSE, saying everything was fine, then having it turn out later there was something wrong that required surgery and an extended rehab???

I guess that dr who performs the physical must have some amazing malpractice insurance!

ah but check out the puff of smoke i artfully put near his head! how suggestive, perhaps of heat coming from his left hand, or of ice cream melting on his head. that's the thing about art, you just never know.
