And Tell Jimmy Rollins He's Ugly Too!

"So, this year, tell Jimmy Rollins we are the team to beat." -Carlos Beltran, February 16th
So we're stealing quotes now. Wasn't enough we steal "Who Let The Dogs Out" and "Sweet Caroline". Now we're stealing guarantees.

If you know me at all, you'll know that I applaud this. Good for Carlos Beltran. Enough blandness and vanilla wafer quotes. Go for the throat. Now he's the lightning rod, and you know that he's gotta know that even an off-handed quote to a bunch of reporters would make it's way towards the headlines ... because that's what quotes like that do. So good for him in his attempts to be a vocal leader.

Just so long as Carlos knows that now, to back up that quote, he's gotta be Superman this season. And as you know, there's only one Superman.

All right, I guess there's two now.

I wouldn't worry too much about the Mets backing up Beltran's talk.

The primary reason the Phillies won the NL East last year was due to the Mets' epic historical collapse.

This once-in-a-generation occurrence won't be something that Philadelphia will be able to "count on" this year ... not with Johan Santana in the house.

P.S. Philadelphia is a team of arrogant, wife-beating, dirty low-life scum. ;)

I go to Reds/Philly games just to boo Jimmy Rollins.

Does that make me a bad person?

YAY Carlos!
But I do wonder what possessed him to say that?

While I can appreciate what Carlos Beltran says, it must be reminded that when it counted most, Jimmy Rollins stepped up, hence he was named National League MVP. If Beltran wants to tell Jimmy Rollins that the Mets are the team to beat, then I am going to assume that when it is all said and done, Carlos Beltran will become the 2008NL MVP. As much as the Mets need Wright and Reyes to do what they do and as much as we need Pedro, Maine and Perez to do what they can to support Johan, Carlos Beltran is the key to this season...he needs to prove that he is worth all the money he got from the Mets....there is no time for excuses and no time for reasons as to why you constantly struggle at Shea and wonder why you get booed. He must produce a MVP-like season....thoughts?

Just found out I'm going to be moving to Philly in July. Not sure how I feel about this...

Goeff-

I lived in Philly for 10 years. (now in the philly burbs), and here's my advice:

All in all - the new stadium is a nice place to see a game - theres plenty of friendly company (mets fans all over the place) and an environment not quite as vitriolic as when the mets play the yankees.) There were plenty of times I wore my mets jersey riding to the Vet on the Broad Street Line.

Get a dish so you can watch the games.

Also- the fans here would all much rather be watching the Eagles play. Even when the Phillies are doing well. Its really unbelievable. So even if the Phils are in contention in September, the press will instead be focused on the Donovan McNabb deathwatch or some similar scandal.

Good luck in the city of brotherly love.

Beezer/Metstra,

maybe Beltran figured he could catch some positive mojo by "pulling a rollins"?

After all, if saying something stupid leads to an mvp year, what the hell...

though now that I look it up Carlos had a better OPS last year than Rollins, so maybe he should've kept his mouth shut after all.

It was actually Beltran's mole who made the comment.

I didn't see the Superman dunk live, but did anyone else notice that the announcer was humming the Indiana Jones theme.

It worked for the MVP - maybe it'll work for the MoleVP

I think the Mets don't have to worry about another collapse this year, especially with Santana there. I'm predicting a subway series World Series for 2008; atleast I hope so.
