The Long Walk Home

Did you see the long depressing limp that Gary Sheffield took off the field after experiencing right hamstring "cramps" (forgive me if I'm skeptical of medical reports) on Friday?

Seemed eerily like how the rest of this season's going to go, didn't it? A long, slow limp to the finish line, with a couple of moments where you think you're going to collapse in a heap of body parts, as Sheffield almost did at least once.

If you didn't see it, find a replay and see for yourself. Sheffield eschewed the cart so that he can walk off the field under his own power, except that it took the better part of an hour. If that's how the Mets season is going to go for you, you might want to just take the cart ... and go to the beach.

Until November.

And remember, surgery's on Thursday.
"Let's go out and beat the Mets ... just like old times." -Greg Maddux before the game, and after his number 31 was retired
Oh, excuse me Greg ... I didn't know that 2008 counted as "the old days". Hell, Maddux could have put on a uniform and did it himself. Two hits, 11-0 ... wow.

The Maddux was ceremony was wonderful. Of course Greg took himself out before it was two-thirds complete...

Well, at least we don't have to put up with any more "hey guys! What kind of fans are you? They're only 2.5 games out, enjoy the ride!" nonsense. Maybe I'll be able to "enjoy" the odd game (and I do mean odd) here and there, but this team is pretty much unwatchable. You do feel for them though, as one by one, injured players trudge off the field in some kind of death march. But I'm sure glad we have a manager that thinks this is all fucking hilarious.

P.S. Speaking of which, will Manny Acta be the Mets manager next year? I would put the odds at 80% myself.

Greg, I thought the end of the ceremony was touching, when Wohlers gave up that home run to Maddux's kid.

James, the ride has crashed. And it's not Jerry Manuel at the wheel, it's Jerry Lewis.

Krup, there's gotta be an America's Next Top Model marathon on television ... there always is. Either that or youtube.
