The Gift Of Catch

Sorry. I know you really wanted one, but I couldn't find a Nintendo Wii to save my life. You would think that a whole year after this thing came out that it wouldn't be such an "in" gift. Boy, was I wrong. You should have warned me of this before you asked me for one at the last minute. But the Mets offered me Luis Castillo and even paid the rest of his contract. They didn't even want much in return, just future considerations (I hope they don't ask me for a Wii.) So you may not be able to play Wii Baseball, but you can play catch with Luis in your backyard for three whole years ... basically for free. If you get bored with him, maybe you can trade him in for $15 at Game Stop (or for Jeff Keppinger in Cincinnati.) So, I hope you enjoy your gift. Remember, don't feed him after midnight or he turns into Carlos Baerga. Merry Christmas.

Post Texieria signing rant (picture Chevy Chase in Christmas vactation): It seems like every Met fan is going mental about all of the money that the Yankees are spending this offseason, but to me, this is just the Yankees failing to learn from mistakes in the past. They haven't won in a while because they've been trying to buy championships, which just doesn't work. Mets fans everywhere want them to keep pace with high-priced free agents. They fail to recognize that you can't plug every hole with the most expensive guy unless you're the Yankees - and still it doesn't get you a ring. Mets fans tend to forget that there are tons of other teams that can't even spend like the Mets do to sign close-to-top guys to fill most of our needs and are ALWAYS counting on retreads, mediocres, or unknown minor leaguers to fill holes. Also we forget how everyone who is not a Yankee fan hates them and their fans. I don't want to be a fan of that team, regardless of how much they win. Rant over. Happy Holidays.

The Mets are spending some pretty good coin as well with K-Rod and Putz + Wagner who won't even play ($23MM for Wagner and K-Rod alone). Check out what they pay for Lowe over the next couple of weeks. The Yankees also have huge payroll rolling off and will likely have a lower payroll than last year. According to reports, Tex turned down higher Boston money to accept the Yankees offer. With that said, the last player the Yankees "stole" from Boston was Johnny Damon and we have seen how that turned out.

I do agree though that the Yankees have tried to buy it during this decade and it hasn't worked...especially the bad choices they have made on the pitching side.

It will seem a bit ridiculous though if Manny goes to the Yankees and Lowe to the Mets. You might as well have held the winter meetings in New York and only invited the Yankees and Mets. All of the big news this season has come from them...has anyone else done anything newsworthy?

Just a question I wanted to throw out there. What about making a deal with the Spanks for H. Matsui? He's in the final year of his contract and he's due $13 million for the season. The guy is not the feared hitter that Manny is, but he's the anti-Manny--personality wise--a true professional. And if he's healthy enough, you can pretty much count on him to hit around .300 with a .370 or so OBP and drive in 90-100 rbis. Unfortunately he bats lefty. If the Mets were willing to take on half of that $13 million for next season, he could probably be had for a mid-level prospect I would think. Nady would be better, but we'd probably have to give up more to get him cuz he's younger and he's getting a lot less $$$. It's a risk of course but it might be better than say committing more money and years to a player like Abreu or Dunn. Wilpons would have the added bonus of money from the Japanese media and fans.
Any thoughts?

Chris,

That's an interesting thought. It's something I don't think I can delve into here only because it would be a multi-faceted response. And if that's the case, I mind as well make it a real post instead of a comment.

And I hope y'all had a wonderful holiday and I hope everyone got Wiis.

Do you actually want a Wii or was this just a device to bring up Luis Castillo? If you want one and are in New York, go to the Nintendo store in Rockafeller Center first thing in the morning. Wait on the line for about 30 minutes before it opens and they will have them for you. It's how I got mine randomly this past February when I was suffering from a bit of insomnia.
